A MAIN TRUNK STORY.
A BOTTOMLESS PIT. FIFTEEN FEET DEEP. Press Association, Taihape, March 25. “ An extraordinary circumstance is reported from the Main Trunk Line works. It appears that a cutting above Waiouru on the line proper suddenly subsided, showing th» presence of a large bottomless cave. At present the trains do not run over this line, but go by way of what is commonly known as the deviation. It is stated that the cutting which is a large one, will be practically useless involving large expense to make a deviation. The subsidence occurred when workmen were widening the cutting. Later. The cave in the Waiouru cutting is 15 feet deep, running at right angles across the formation. It is believed to be an old dried up underground w r ater course and it is anticipated, says a Taihape telegram, that be filled up with stones without trouble.
