ATHLETICS.
HUNTERYILLE SPORTS. Arrangements are well in hand for the Sports to be held at Hunterville, to-morrow (Wednesday), and the meeting promises to be a great success, The programme should give general satisfaction and as the tracks on the Domain are in good order, some interesting contests should result. The Highland events are attracting a great deal of attention, and pipers and dancers are coming from Wanganui, and other places. The popular Crozier’s Orchestra (Marton) has been secured for the dav, and the engagement of such a talented band of musicians will provide a high-class programme of music for the Sports. A capital programme has been arranged for the concert In the evening. The orchestra will be the same as at the Sports, and consists of seven instruments, so a treat is in store for all lovers of music. The outside talent for the entertainment is very strong, and includes that fine elocutionist, Mr G. Swan, of Wanganui, who is always welcome to a Hunterville audience; Mr Hanlon, another Wauganuite, a comic singer who never fails to please; Mr W. Little, of Marton, is a favourite singer, and can ba relied upon for a good item ; Mr Ooker, another Martonite, is a comic singer of some note, and lias a big reputation extending from New Plymouth to Palmerston ; Master Foote, of Wellington, has a wonderful soprano voice, and is highly spoken of as a singer. The lady singers are Mrs Rees, Miss Marshall, and Miss Brooker, all of whom can be relied upon to render an excellent song.. The entertainment will conclude with a laughable farce, which will be staged by the Keay family, of Wellington. It will be seen by the foregoing that the programme to bo presented next Wednesday evening* is something out of the ordinary, and the hall will, no doubt, be filled to overflowing. The athletes who so worthily represented this Dominion at the important sports gathering in Tasmania and Australia recently,wore tendered a formal welcome home this afternoon by the Y/elliugton cents e of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Athletic Association.. Oongratulatorv speeches were delivered by the Hon. T. W. Hislop (Mayor of Wellington), who presided, and by the Hon. George Fowlds and cMesers T. M. Wilford, G H. Izard, and *F. M. B. Fisher, M.P. ’s. Mr Green (manager of the team), in acknowledging tiie expressions of pleasure at-"the success of the team, suggested that Karr and Murray should be sent to represent New Zealand at the Olympian games in Loudon nest July, and' perhaps the Government might help. Mr Wilford promised to do his best to obtain a grant for the purpose. Mr Fisher said lie would not. pledge himself to ask Tiie Government for money for sport, as he thought the necessary money could and should be obtained privately.
