Orchard has been sentenced to death for murdering Governor Stennenberg. The Coui t expressed the conviction that Orchard’s allegations as to the conspiracy among the officers of the Western Federation of Miners to assassinate Stennenberg were the exact truth, and therefore recommended that the sentence be commuted to imprisonment for life.

[The trial of the officials of the Miners’ Federation who were accused by Orchard of inciting him to commit murders and outrages, caused intense excitement and considerable surprise was felt when the jury returned a verdict of “Not Guilty.’’]
