Competitors also rolled up in strong force. Mr W. R. Walker, Secretary Foildiug Centre N. Z. A. O'., was present. The tracks were in good order, and all other appointments were in keeping. The committee had worked hard and succeeded admirably in “providing a really firstclass day’s sport. The man to whom most praise is due for this pleasing state of affairs is the Secretary, Mr A. Way, whoso courteous maimer and business like methods won the admiration of all with whom ho came in contact. All events wore got oil' in good time, and Mr D. Henderson made a capital starter. Finishes in most of the events were close, thanks to the good handicapping of Messrs A. Way, O. Gibbous and ti. Hunt. As judges of the running and cycling events Messrs F. G. Hilton, T. Ross and J. H. McDonald, gave ’decisions that were not disputed Mr M. Ma it was in his element as supervisor of the horse events, giving every satisfaction, and the same may bo" said of the judge of the horse events —Messrs R. Aid worth, A. H. Bill and Jas. Coombo. Mr E. Jolly made an excellent clerk for these gentleman, and Mr S. M. Clark rendered invaluable assistance to the committee of horse events. Mr C. TPIS CONCERT,

A fitting finale to a most successful days’ anting was the Grand Minstrel Garden Party Entertainment given under the auspices of the Glob." No concert given by local performers lias ever drawn a larger audience than that which thronged the Opera House last evening. Extra seats had to be provided upstairs, while down stairs was packed. The opening overture “Wiegaua’s Selection of Irish Memories” by Orozier’s orchestra, was a very pretty number, well executed, and the opening scene, a batchelbr’s den in Govent Garden, was also pretty. The stage was tastefully arranged, some fine palms being shown, while numerous easy chairs and occasional tables were monopolised by the Interlocutor’s (Mr Crcker) guests—a dozen well trained artists, who provided a good evening’s entertainment. Messrs J. Pawson, O. Gibbons, J. Meek, and M. Walters us corner men, were decidedly pleasing, their many jokes and local hits pleasing immensely. The opening chorus, “Zmlyero” went with a good swing, and was followed by a coon song, Making Eyes”, well sung by Mr J. Meek. Mr H. Sheriff-was happy in his rendering of ‘‘Ailsa Mine”, and was heartily recalled. His response “Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes” was equally pleasing. Mr A Train scored a decided hit with his song “The Boys’ Brigade, ” with company chorus, the march past of the school cadets, with limelight effects, being very well done, and evoking considerable applause. Mr T. O’Donnell gave a pleasing rendering of “Since Nellie Wont Away, ” as did also Mr Ghas. Gibbons' in “There’s a Dark Man Coining With a Bundle. ” Mr J. Pawson, sang “Take a Gar” and had to respond. Mr Coker sang “Dreaming” in a finished manner. Mr Maco Walters’ whistling song “The Bowery Boy,” won for him an outburst of applause that was well earned. He had to respond. Another fine number of the Orozier’s orchestra was the second overture “ Tho .7nh«r. ’ ’ This was followed by “Gondola Dreams” splendidly sung by Mr M. R. -Dunn. Mr J. Meek’s comic, song, “The Saftest of the ifamily” i., character was well worth :d;e r.,rpo we insisted upon. The

most pvpiih’.r vocalist of the evening was MrW. iff Bpindlor, a singer new to a Marton audience, and the possessor or a very fine voice. 'He sang “Davy Junes’ Looker,” in great style and hi:; response “We’re off to the Rio Grande,” was equally pleasing. The entertainment concluded with a highly amusing farce “Engaging a Thoatical Company.” in which the

characters were:— Theatrical Manager, Boss Croker; Negro Servant, Re to Pawsono; Walter Bentley, Mr Murphy; George Swanale, Mr Stanley. ; Madame Clarina, MissMascma; Amy Costelino, Miss Eva Jelly; Signor Tarino, Mr Trainer. Each of the characters in this was good, but the palm fell to Pete Pawsono, whose eccentricities proved him a born negro comedian. A word of praise is due to Mr W. L. Little, who, as stage manager, was largely responsible for the evening’s success. His arrangements were perfect, and were the subject of many flattering comments. AWAHURI SPORTS. The eleventh annual sports gathering of the Av. almri Sports Club took lace on Messrs Moore Bros. ’ grounds at Awahuri, yesterday. The weather was beautifully fiue and although the attendance during the early part of the day was not large, as the day wore on however, it increased considerably, and by 2 p.m. there was a fine muster. The Feildiug Band, under Mr R. F. Haybittle, considerably enlivened the proceedings. Mr Rogers as Secretary was the right man in the right place, and a great deal of the success of the gathering is due to the untiring efforts of Messrs C. H. Tarrant, the President, and Collingwood, starter and handicapper, and their willing comimttee. The different events were got off well to time, and the day’s outing proved very enjoyable to one and all. In the horse events several riders came to grief, but fortunately no ■serious accidents occurred. £35 was taken at the gates, this does not include member’s tickets. Results:
