NAPIER CARNIVAL.

Per Press Association. Napier, March 16.

Napier inaugurated its ten days Carnival to-day under conditions of a promising nature. The towm is crowded with visitors from far and near and the weather, though chilly, is fine. All the main streets are gaily decked with bunting and a holiday feeling prevails. The official opening took place at the Marine Parade Rotunda, where a brief addresses were delivered by Mr Millar, Minister of Labour, the Mayor, Mr J. Vigor Brown, and others. Subsequently a huge Maori demonstration was held on the Recreation Ground, and a bowling [tournament, in which fifteen rinks were engaged, commenced. The latter will run three days and be followed by pairs matches. The races will fill the bill to-morrow and Wednesday; the swimming championship and sailings on Thursday; motor gymkana, Friday; athletic gala, Saturday; swimming and rowing championships, Monday; children’s fete, Tuesday; and a grand military tournament to wind up on Wednesday. THE BOWLING TOURNAMENT. Napier, March 16. ■ The Bowling Tournament in connection with the Carnival was commenced to-day, and the following is the result of to-day’s play First round, Section* A : Palmerston North (.0. Bropby) 40 beat Palmerston South (Pickering) 10, Dannevirke 19 beat Napier (Smith) 17, St. John’s 22 beat Wellington 21, Marton 24 beat Greenmeadows (Crowley) 15. Section B : Bluff Hill 85 beat Hastings 10, Palmerston North (Bunting) 21 beat Napier (Bull) 20, Gisborne beat Greenmeadows (Badley), Masterton a bye. The following is the result of the second round of the Bowling Tournament ; Section A: Dannevirke -20 beat Palmerston N. (Pickering) 9, Napier (Smith) 27 beat Wellington 17, St. John’s 23'beat Greenmeadows (Crowley) 15, Palmerston (Brophy) 31 beat Marton 19.

Section B. —Bluff Hill 25 beat Napier (Bulb) 22, Palmerston N. (Bunting) 21 beat Hastings 15, Greenmeadows (Badley) a bye,; Gisborne and Masterton to play. (
