THE CHURCH MILITANT.

A BISHOP ON NATIONAL DEFENCE. Press Association. —Copyright. Received March 10, 11.5 p.m. 'Sydney, March 10. Bishop Stretch, in his opening address at the Anglican Synod at Newcastle, in dealing with the question of national defence, said that if the community expects in time of danger all able-bodied men to rally to their country’s call, it became tbeir duty to give to all sncli training and arms as should save tbeir courage from being mere suicide, believing that training could be planned to do away with larrikiuism, and add to the physique of the race. “We do not wish,” he said, “if war comes to see our manhood die for lack of knowledge, so it seems to me that universal training may well be regarded by a Christian man as the strongest assurance that we shall not be attacked. ’ ’
