COURTS.

Per Press Association. Gisborne, March 4. The case of Henara Matenga, a Maori, who for several years defied pursuit by the police in the backwoods of this district, was continued before the Supremo Court to-day. The prisoner is being charged with theft from a bush camp. Counsel for the defence raised the question of sanity and called prisoner who related the story of his adventures. Matenga said the primary reason he took to the bush was about a horse and he was afraid that if caught he would be shot. On many occasions he heard shots in the bush and thought it was people after him. He took a gun from the camp because they had fired at him with it. Matenga “ was convicted and sentenced to 12 mouths’ imprisonmenton the two charges brought against him.
