OFFER TO MR THAW.

New York, January 16. To-day was made quite merry for Mrs Thaw by the receipt of a letter from a desperate man in Ohio who bears an extraordinary likeness to Thaw. This man generously offers for the trifling consideration of £600,000 to substitute himself for the prisoner and take his chances of acquittal or the electric _ chair. He says life is a failure. His only desire now is to furnish his family with liberal means of subsistence, since at present his wife and children are suffering ‘ from extreme povertv. He has not the slightest fear that he will fail to deceive the prison officials, the judge, and the jury, but requests that, if he is acquitted, he be allowed to depart quietly with his earnings to a foreign country. His offer was refused. Apparently the atmosphere of the court-room is conducive to insane projects The judge lias received several letters from cranks threatening to assassinate him if_ Thaw is condemned. One of these imbeciles was arrested vesterday.
