The Nelson Creek Dredging Co.’s old dredge on the West Coast has been destroyed by fire. A movement; is on foot in Hastings to induce Govearmnent to acquire land in the Waimarama Estate to form a health resort and watering place. A New Plymouth telegram reports that, owing to the rain, there are poor prospects for the baud contest garden party this afternoon, and the gouud will bo heavy for the Athletic Championship Meeting to-morow. Mr J. B. Hiue, who contested the Patea seat at the last general election, has been selected as Opposition candidate for the Stratford seat at next general election. Timaru Borough Council received nine tenders for the erection of the library for which Mr Oaruegia granted £3OOO. The lowest tender was £2940 and the Council propose to accept this. The Premier addressed an immense audience at Whangarei ‘last night and said that Government never proposed in any single law to take away the freehold from the farmer and never intended to propose it. Government would pay this year to the Public Works Fund £BBO,OOO aud still have £770,000 to commence next financial year. Auckland reports that a fourroomed house, owned and occupied by Mr Thomas Eodda, was totally desroyed by fire at Whitiauga at about 10 ‘o’clock on Sunday night. The occupants who were all in bed had a narrow escape. The fire is said to have originated in a defective oil heater, which had been left alight in the kitchen for the purpose of keeping hot some food for a sick child. Mrs Rodda, who was severely burnt in trying to save some of the effects, had to he taken to the hospital for medical treatment.
