GERMANY’S COLONIES.
AN OPTIMISTIC REVIEW. Per Press Association Received Fcbiuary 19, 10 p.m. Berlin, February 19. Herr Derobarg. in the Reichstag, stated that soon only 'a few colonies would require Imperial assistance. The trade of the Cameroona had increased 40 per cent, last year. Considerable mineral wealth had been discovered in the Caroline and Ladrone Islands. Forty million tons of phosphates were on the Island of Nauru alone. Herr Dernberg promised to |try to safeguard ten millions of natives in East Africa against any brutal display of power. He added that if the Government acceded to the wishes of the white farmers the entire labour force of the colony would emigrate to British territory, where labour conditions were lighter and more humane.
