VISITORS TO THE SHOW ABB INVITED TO INSPECT SPECIAL DISPLAY OF GO-CARTS AND * WICKERWAREf! AT Alfred C. Stannard’s, MAIN STREET WEST, PALMERSTON jNORTH.
Two marriage certificates'produced by counsel, and shoved under the nose of a witness, were responsible for a mild sensation in the Christchurch Magistrate’s Courts last Tuesday. James Albert Sheard asked the Court to vary an order requiting him to contribute towards the maintenance of *his wife and .child, on the ground that reasonable access to the child was refused by his wife. In cross-examination, the opposing counsel produced the two 'certificates, and invited the witness to examine them. One was issued from Somerset House, and revealed a marriage in England between one James Albert Sheard and a woman named Hollins, in 1878. The other showed a marriage in New Zealand between Jas. Sheard and another woman in 1883. Mr Donnelly pointed out that the descriptions of the bridegroom in both certificates, in regard to parentage, occupation, and other particulars were identical. Sheard absolutely denied that he was the man referred to in the English certificate. The Magistrate impounded the documents so that further inquiry could be made. Ho remarked that he was not satisfied that the truth had been told. The application to vary the order was dismissed. We are prepared to lose money. Every pound we lose is a gain to you.
