Mr Pussell lias sent' in a tender.fcr cutting a portion of the proposed drain at Beaconsfield, but his price is much higher than my estimate, and it would not be advisable to accept a tender except for. the whole of the work. The Engineer to the Rangitikei County Council has written'thanking this Council for offer of road " machine, bnt as a purchase of an “Austin” has been made, itwill not be required. I have advertised the Marfcon block bridge contract, tenders to close on the 18th March. Plans and specifications for all works subsidised by. Government have been approved by .the Distrfct Road Engineer, and the only contract not let or advertised is for metalling on the Apiti Main South road, the thirds not being available for expenditure. Mr Wilson’s road at Rata has been cleared of slips, and widened where necessary, and is now in good order. The decking on the smaller bridge at Waituna is worn very, thin and I propose renewing it as soon as possible. There being a sawmill now working not far away the . timber should not be expensive. Repairs have been effected to the Kimbolton. pound. The exceptional dry weather has caused many of the metalled;roads. to break up very much and they are now very rough to travel over. The Chairman reported that, believing a change of representation on the Wellington Harbour Board was advisable, and acting with Mr Cobbe, of Feilding, lie had helped to secure the election of Mr Cohen.—The report was adopted. The Treasurer reported the general account: cr. £1503 14s lid. The accounts to be passed for payment amounted to £747 15s lid. GENERAL BUSINESS. It was resolved—

That steps be taken to raise a loan of £OOO over a special rating area to include all sections abutting on the Te Parapara, Pukerimu and Mangawhararikei roads, from McKean’s corner to the Rangitikei river, for j,the purpose of widening, improving and fencing the said roads. That the amount of the unexpended balance of the Pourangaki loan be re-deposited during another year. That the estimates for the coming year’s expenditure in the County be prepared for consideration at next meeting and that the rate Jto meet this expenditure be struck as a general rate over the whole County, the amending Acf of last session not providing for differential rating. The special order striking a special rate 17-38 of a penny in the £, over the Tapuae and Peep-o’-Day special rating districts to pay interest on the loan of £825, was confirmed. Also it was decided to strike a special rate of 3-128 of a penny in the £ to pay interest on the ten per cent addition to loan of £IBOO, for metalling the Kawhatau road. That tenders be called for contract No. 85, metalling Apiti-Maiu South road. —The work to proceed when the thirds are available.
