TE ORANGA HOME.
Press Association. Christchurch, February 13. Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., has received from the Governor his appointment as a Commissioner for the ;purpose|of inquiring into and reporting upon the management of the Te Oranga Home. The Commission sets forth that the Commissioner is to enquire and report as to '‘the management of the said school, and the treatment of the resident inmates therein during the last two years in regard to the following matters: — (a) The suitability and efficacy of the methods adopted in the said school for the classification of the inmates in sections or grades for reformatory treatment; (b) the general treatment of the inmates; particularly as regards methods of punishment, having regard to humanity on the one hand, the maintenance of proper discipline on the other, and any special treatment as regards punisbment’to which any particular inmates (whose case may be brought before you during your inquiry) may have been subjected; (c) the fduties of the members of the staff, and whether or not such duties and conditions under which" they performed entail any undue hardships; (d) the relation between the manager of the .staff and the attendants under her control, and the discretion or otherwise exercised by the'manager in res pect of her dealings with such attendants. ” Mr Bishop will sit as Commissioner on March 2nd. Mr E,. H. Pope, Assistant Inspector of Industrial Schools, will represent the Education Department, and Mr J. Gray, of the Hansard staff, will act as secretary.
