WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD.

A meeting of the Education Board was held last evening. Present: Messrs Pirani (chairman), Spurdle, Bennett, Dixon, Purnell, Cargill, and Fraser. The following resignations were received: —L. Jamieson (Campbell Street), W. Coventry (Makotuku), F. E. S. Rockel (Toi Toi), A, Lewis (Tokoranga), K. Montgomery (Makowhai). Leave of absence was granted as follows: —A. McLaughlin (Queen’s Park!, E. Scheldt (Taonui), O. H. T. Bowater (Rougotea), J. G. Blair (Wanganui D.H. S. ). Letter from the Moutoa Committee in favour of Mr Barrrowclough being appointed to a larger school.—Receiveud. From the Chief Inspector as follows: —In view of the alteration of the ages of candidates eligible to compete for the Junior and Senior National Scholarships, I would suggest that the regulations for the Board’s scholarships be amended to read as follows :—Clause 2, age limit—For 13 years of age and 15 years of age substitute “14 years “of age and 16 years of age'’ respectively.—Adopted. From the Chief Inspector as follows; —Referring to the Minister’s communication re uniform'text books for the public schools of the Dominion, I have to state in the opinion of of this district it is both desirable and feasible to have uniform readers under £the following conditions :—(1) That in all the schools,of the Dominion the pupils receive promotion at the end of the year; (2) that the contents and get-up of the books be approved by a committee of teacher s and £iuspectcrs; (3) That the g books be changed periodically, say once every five or six years It is considered that iu the meantime the teacher should not bo absolutly restricted with respect to other books.—Adopted.

Raetihi. —Architect to go on with erection of additions to school, a grant of £l2O having been received. Headmasters of a number of schools in vicinity of Palmerston to be asked on whose authoirty they closed their schools for the Palmerston Show. On the motion of Mr Fraser 'it was resolved that the inspectors’ requisitions for supplies of schools be laid before the Reports Committee at each meeting.— On the motion of Mr Bennett it was resolved that the headteacher of each school be asked to supply an iuveutaory of the furniture and appliances in his school.—On Mr Bennett’s motion it was resolved that a return of the expenditure on apparatus be supplied. On the motion of Mr Purnell it was resolved that the Department be asked, in view of regulation 9, whether the Board can grant a scholarship of A. B. Mossman, to be held at Nelson College. The Board adqojurned till the 36th inst.
