FIRES.
Per Press Association. Christchurch, February 11. The factory and offices of the Colonial and Foreign Agency Company were totally destroyed by fire early this morninm The insuaruces were £3400 in the Alliance on the buildings and contents, and £4OO in the New Zealand on the building. Dunedin, February 11. A large wooden house, situated between George and Filleul streets, was destroyed by fire 'to-night. The ground in which it stood was practically surrounded by wooden fcottages, some of which abutted on 'the George street shops. The fire originated in the kitchen chimney. The house was old and blazed furiously, and though an ejce’lent pressure of water was available, only the outer shell and part of the back premises were saved, with part of the furniture downstairs. Fortunately the wind was light, and the firemen prevented the spread of the flames. The house was occupied by Mr Charles Ward, two other gentlemen, and six ladies. The lease was recently obtained by Hugh Mitchell and Co. The building and furniture were insured. Masterton, February 11. Bush fires are raging between Eketahuna and Pahiatua on both sides of the railway line, and a number of settlers’ houses are in danger. P. Mcßarron’s house, at Mangamahoe, was destroyed through a bush fire on Monday afternoon. The house was insured for £3OO and the furniture for £SO. There are some signs to-night of rain. The Fire Brigade was called out to-day to attend to small grass fires in Masterton. On Monday,night the Railway Department’s rolling stock was removed from Hukauui and Newman stations, out of range of the bush tires.
