ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

Word has been received from i Marokopa of a narrow ecsape from drowning ©freight lads, John Scott, Gibson, Granville, Williams, August, Lane, Bayne, and Harper. They procured a flat bottomed boat and a wave capsized the boat, the occupants being all thrown into the water. Bayne and Gibson were the L iirs't to reach shore. Lance, Scott : Kaud Williams (a Maori), clung to ; the boat which became anchored. The latter dived and cut the painter, ■ .--"tlfen the boat started to drift to sea. ' Scott, saw a large shark and called Williams, who said “I have a - Bh|Sth : l&ife; I’ll settle him.” The - ia,« /speak in high’ terms of the njanner in which Williams behaved. , Bayne was about exhausted and was ' just sinking when he grasped an oar thrown to him. Harper (a son of the diver who lost his life in recovering the Elingamite treasure) was also nearly drowned, being caught in a backwash. Rose McGrath gave great help in rescuing the boys. Dunedin, February 10. William Woods, wiuchman on the Hartley and Riley dredge, was badly scalded through the startingvalve blowing out. Whangarei, February 10. The three-year-old son of the late Pukeroa was burned to death at Opouteke on Saturday by falling into a fire. The child’s mother was outside at the time. Napier, February 10. An accident, which fatally, occurred at Hastings on Saturday. A kerosene stove/ which was being used in the house of a family named Mitchell, caught fire, and was thrown outside. Jemima -Mitchell, a little girl,-in running ■’ round the house, fell over the stove while: it was burning. Her clothing caught fire, she suffered . severe injuries, and died in the Napier Hospital on Sunday night. ; Auckland, February 10. Captain R. G. Hunkin, of the steamer Chelmsford, died suddenly at- his residence, Ponsonby, last night. The deceased had"complained pf indisposition earlier in the day, and whilst sitting in a chair before ■ retiring to bed suddenly expired. > . Nelson, February 11. . The cut was stitched and seemed to be healing when tetanus set in.
