GIR L THIEF'S “SUICIDE.”

. Paris, December 10. Juliette Driel, aged nineteen, was Yesterday caught red-handed in the act of shop-lifting, and was taken to -a police depot. During the examination by. the inspector in charge she suddenly produced from her pocket a small box, and before she could be prevented opened the lid and swallowed some of the white powder Which it contained. Then, with a scream of “I have poisoned myself.” she fell to the floor, apparently m ‘Convulsions. A doctor was hastily •summoned, and administered a number, of <5 mater-poisons and emetics. •In about an hour’s time the girl appeared to regain a normal condition, and was conveyed to her home. The doctor who had attended her took the remains of the white . .powder away with him for analysis, and this morning announced that the poison was an ordinary white powder and perfectly -harmless. A •policeman was immediately sent to the girl’s home, where he found her to he really ill suffering from the ■effects of the emetics. She was again brought before the magistrate, who, considering that the illness she had brought upon herself was sufficient punishment, set her at liberty.
