THE POET’S CORNER.
ILLUSION. I stood upon a mountain’s brow, And saw the world before me spread ; The green plains marked with town and stead. The silver rivers winding slow. Gold cornland, wood, and scarp, and And, far beyond the sapphire shine Where strong ships sought the fadnig line; The world, the world, it sang to me. The wind was loose in racing skies. And called me with a happy voice ; “Come now, come now, and make your choice; For youth is might,’but ’youth soon flies. See all the jewel dream unfurled ; ’Tis yours, a goodly heritage Leave limping doubt to crippled age. ’ ’ I laughed and ran to meet the world. But pleasant straths from distant heights Are' choked and [clinging weed, And where I trudge, with slackened speed, On black, gray roads the norther bites. The shining towns of care, Few, few the singing hours of joy, % The gold is dulled with coarse alloy : The golden world X saw so fair. —F. O’NEILL GALLAGHER. ln*the Daily News.
