DYSPEPSIA. Dyspepsia, or Indigestion, may be considered the great torment of civilisation. The strenuous life of the 20th century is possibly a primary cause. Ope of the most characteristic symptoms of dyspepsia is pain at the cardiac end of the stomach, to which the name of cardialgia has been applied, on account of the distress being in such close proximity to the heart. Many dyspeptics imagine from this symptom that they are subjects of organic heart disease, and suffer intense yet groundless mental anxiety on that account. Heartburn, iPyrosis, and Water-brash are modifications of this symptom. As further aids in distinguishing between dyspepsia from deficient secretion of the gastric juice and deficient motion of stomach, in the former neither flatulence or constipation are generally present, whilst in the latter, flatulence is one of the most characteristic symptoms and constipation i§ usually well marked. _ It is scarcely necessary to give further detailed description, the general symptoms of indigestion are too well known.
