TAIHAPE.

RACES AT KARIOI. From Our Own Correspondent. Quite a number of Taihapeaus travelled to Karioi, amongst whom was “your own.” The attendance was very good indeed, .there being about 600 persons present. The secretarial work was on the hands of Mr Jas. Hogg, whose courteous manner was pleasing to all. Mr Pike, of Raetihi, was judge, and his decisions were undoubted, though there were some close finishes. Mr P, Donovan was starter, and Mr G. Graham sported the scarlet as clerk of the course. The bookies were much in evidence, there’ being 15 of them and their clerks, and they appeared to do good business. This meeting hitherto has been practically a Maori one, but the.advent of the iron horse makes it easy to get there and back home in the day, and there is no doubt with good management, the Karioi fixture will in future become a very popular meeting. Results:— Handicap Hurdles. Arahura (Whale), 1; Hokio, (Young) 2 Ladies’ Bracelet. Perseverance (Selby), 1; Tokutapu, (Brady), 2.1 Karioi Cup.—Belario (Young), 1 ; Snip, (Price), 2; Speciosa (Whale), 8. Morrison Memorial.—Raupetere (Fahey), 1; Tokatapu (McClusky), 2. * s Flying Handicap.—Snip (Price), 1; Mahoe (Young), 3. Kaimanawa Handicap. —Resemble 1, Kairio 3. We note that the following gentlemen have been nominated for the vacancy in the Education Board, Messrs W. T. Bowater and J. P. Aldridge. The weather is still hot and verydry, and the country is enveloped in smoke. The fires have been very bad at Ohutu near Utiku, and hundreds of acres of grass has been burnt, and the fires are still dangerous. The settlers have been battling with the fiery element night and day; indeed until we haverain.it will be hard to tell the amount of damage done. The country everywhere appears to be on fire, and all the settlers can tell tales of loss. In the town water is very scarce and in some cases a supply from the Hautapu is being carted.
