A REASONABLE EXPLANATION.
SIR, —I have read Mr John Stevens’, M.P., letter in your issue of Thursday last. I quite agree that Mr Stevens should in fairness to himself make it clear that he was not to blame for his absence from' the meeting with the Minister. I was only advised the previous day of the Minister’s intention to stop ai Martou for the purpose of inspecting the site offered for a dairy school ; therefore, time being so limited, and I having no knowledge of Mr Stevens’ whereabouts, *1 was unable to communicate with him in time. There was only time to arrange with the Mayor, Councillors, and the Chairman of the County Council. Fortunately, Mr Remington, M. P., was accompanying the Minister, and he dicf the honours. It is much to be regretted that I was unable to advise Mr Stevens, M.P. in time, but I think that after reading this letter he will consider it a reasonable explanation.—l am, etc. P. R. H. BRICE, Chairman Marton Land Co.
