THE BRITISH NAVY.
Press Association —Copyright Received Feb 6, 11.12 P-m. _ London, Last Night. Lord Esher declines to join the new Imperial Maritime League, because its demand for a public enquiry into «the Navy amounts to. a vote of want Of confidence in the Admiralty, and would cause Admiral Fisher’s resignation, which everyone in Ger--33aany, from tli6 Kaisor downwards, desires to see. ' . . Received February 7, 8.1*6 a.m. f London, February 6. Mr Asquith objected to Lord Tweedmouth’s estimates as too high, and the estimates have been returned to the Admiralty for revision. The Cabinet has appointed a committee to consider further retrenchment, especially in the Navy. A hundred and thirty Liberals, who are pledged to reduction of armaments, are now pressing Government ‘to reduce the estimates, though they have not yet been tabled. The debate thereon yesterday was postponed, which is obviously inconvenient to Government.
