FEILDING BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting was held last night, the Mayor (Mr Trewin) in the chair. CORRESPONDENCE. From Messrs Gillespie and Prior, stating that Messrs Bell, Gully and Myers Were of opinion that the points of law in the case between the Borough Council and the ' Gas Company should be argued before a ; judge in banco.—Approved. From Gillespie and Prior, advising that the objections to the construction of an open drain in Norta street, were not legally tenable.— Tenders to be invited for constfucton of drain at once. From the Technical School Committee, requesting the use of the Chamber to hold meetings of the committee. Request refused on the ground that to do so would be to create a precedent which other societies might endeavour to take advantage of. REPORTS., The Finance Committee advised that unregistered dogs other than sheep dogs, found about the town, be destroyed.—The report was adopted. \ The Sanitary Committee recommended that tenders be invited for the removal of nightsoil outside of the sewerage area, and that it be done at the cost of the Council, and that the people within the sewerage area who require the services of the contractor make their own arrangements.—The report was referred back, with a suggestion that arrangements bo made .with present contractors. The Engineer reported that the mechanical filters would arrive in April. The necessary timber to complete the decking of the Kiwitea bridge,JUad been ordered. He suggested 'that 10,000 feet of jarrah timber be ordered for bfidgej decking.— It was decided to order the timber. , The Engineer further recommnded that a quantity of lime stone be obtaind for use on the footpaths, which was adopted. It was decided that tenders be invited for work on North road and alteration of offices. The manager of the abattoir reported that there had been slaughtered during the past month 100 cows, 38 bullocks, 356 sheep, 114 lambs, 5 pigs, and 12 calves. The fees amounted to £Bl Ids. —lt was remarked that this was a record for cows. Mr R. F. Haybittle, representing the billiard-room keepers, attended the meeting, and requested that the hour of closing should be eleven o’clock instead of ten, recently brought into force. Messrs Aitken and Jones, a deputation from the Feilding Band, requested monetary assistance. The baud was prepared to give the public music in return.. They pointed out that bands were subsidised by the Town Councils in different parts of the country. It was stated that the band had expended about £BOO in instruments and band-room. Mr Saywell, Superintendent of the Fire Brigade, attended and asked the Council to supply a map of the fire plugs and have their position marked. —Granted. In regard to the matter of closing the billiard saloons, it was decided to obtain the advice of the Borough solicitors whether the hour of eleven as printed on the copies of the Borough bylaws, or the hour of ten, as decided by the resolution of the Council previous to the publication of the bylaw, was the legal hour for closing. It was decided that the request of the band be considered when the estimates are brought down. Cr. Tolley gave notice of intention to.move that a sum be placed on the estimates to complete the approach to the South street reserve. It was decided to hold a 'meeting on Thursday next to consider the proposal to widen the Manchester street bridge by loan.
