HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT Press Association. Wellington, February 3. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner, dated London, February Ist: The mutton market is dull and trade very disappointing, there being only a hand to mouth demand. River Plate mutton is in large supply and being strongly pushed for sale. The following are current quotations :—Canterbury mutton 3%d per lb. North Island 3>£d, Australia River Plate 3d.
There is a fair local demand for this season’s New Zealand lamb. Canterbury brands are quoted at 6d. The beef market is weak and there is no change in prices to report. The butter market is very firm and excited on account of the falluig off of receipts. There are more buyeis than sellers and there is general confidence in the maintenance of present prices. Choicest New Zealand butter averaged 124 s per cwt during last week. The Tougariro butter to be delivered next week lias been sold at 126 s per cwt, and 128 s per cwt is now asked. Australian butter is quoted at 1225, Argentine 120 s, Danish 1275, Siberian 117 s per cwt. The cheese market is quiet with a tendency in favour of buyers. White makes 65s 6d, coloured 61s 6d per cwt. The hemp market is dull and uo immediate change is expected. Following are current quotations Good fair grade on spot £2B, fair grade on (.spot £27. Fair current Manila £2B 10s, January-March shipments good fair grade £27 10s, fair grade £26 15s. Fair current Manila £2B. The cocksfoot seed market is quiefc. Buyers are not ke&n to do business and there’are light stocks on hand. Prices are firm. Bright clean dressed seed 17lbs to the bushel is 77s per cwt. The wool market is firm for Merinos. Crossbreds are lower than last quotations. STOCK REPORT. Messrs Dalgety & Co., Ltd., report on their Feilding sale of the 31st ultimo as follows :—We had a good yarding of sheep, and a fair entry of cattle. The following prides were realised :—Woolly lambs small 7s 3d, cull shorn lambs 3s to 4s Bd, medium shorn lambs Bs, 2-tootb wethers 10s 6d, aged ewes ss, bulls £2 to £3.
FEILDING MARKET REPORT. Messrs A. H. Atkinson & Co., Ltd., reportAt our sale on Friday we had a good entry of pigs, poultry, produce, fruit, etc. The attendance was good. Slips and stores were well competed for, but small pigs were on poor demand. A large consignment of fruit and tomatoes was well competed for at satisfactory prices. Quotations :—Horses : Aged horse and trap £l4. Pigs: suckers and weaners 4s, 4s 6d, ss, 7sslips*.nd small stores 12s 6d -13 s 6d IBs 9d; porkers 20s 23s 24s 3d; gooS stores 24s to 295. Poultry: Hen and 10 chickens 3s, chicks 6d, young roosters Is 2d to Is Bel, hens la 6d, Is 7d, Is 8d ; ducks Is 7d to 2s, turkeys, hens 2s 6d ; geese 2s 3d to 2s 6d, all at each ; pair of purebred Houdans 6s. Produce: Potatoes. %d to Id per lb; fruit, plums 2s 9d, 3s, 3s 6d, 4s, and 7s 6cl per case ; tomatoes 3s per case.
