The conditions attached to this event give no real idea as to the best athlete on the ground, and the item should either be elimnated from future programmes, or the conditions altered so that middle distances and hurdle events are included. The announcement that Henderson, Murray, Stubberfield, McKay (Wellington), Trembath and Orbell have been selected to represent the Dominion at the Australasian Championship Meeting has caused some feeling here, and a meeting of the Wellington Centre will be held on Tuesday evening next to consider the matter. Kerr’s omission is objected to, and it is not likely that he will be sent across to Hobart, as it is considered he is far ahead of Stubberfield in walking. Feeling here is that the Wellington centre alone, with the addition of Trembath could send a team worthy of upholding the reputation of the Dominion at the meeting. The Shield has again been won by Wellington, and the question of points was freely discussed on the ground, opinion being expressed that the chance of winning the Shield was all in favor of the town in which the meeting is held, owing to the large number of competitors it could put on the track, and thus scoring points. It was openly admitted that in championshp events only first should count. Had this system been in vogue it could not have affected the result, as Wellington scored 1)4 wins, Canterbury 4, Southland 2, Auckland 1, and* Otago )4- The question of points is one which should receive the earnest consideration of the New Zealand Council.
AUSTRALASIAN REPRESENTATIVES. Wellington, Feb. 2. Henderson (Wellington), Trembath (Southland), Murray and Orbell (Canterbury), have been selected to represent New Zealand at Hobart in the Autsralasian amateur championships. The fifth man will be either McKay (Wellington) or Stubberfield (Canterbury). At the smoke concert last evening Dr Newman said in any case money would be forthcoming to send McKay.
