Twelve thuosand unemployed met at Berlin and demanded that the State undertake building work at Trade Union wages, and the removal of food taxes, also the immediate institution of municipal relief works. They repudiated the acceptance of charity. The'armed police provoked some disorder by unnecessary interference. Thinking that some of the unemployed were trying to force a passage over the bridge they drew their sabres and mercilessly slashed many until there were pools of blood in the streets. The newspaper Yorwaerts estimates there are 60,000 unemployed in Berlin.
