MARSHALL ISLANDS.

Press Association—Copyright. Received Jan. 21, 11.45 p.m. London,. Last Night,

A representative of Messrs Barns, Philp, and Co. of Sydney, after conferring with Herr Dernberg, the German Minister for the Colonies, and the Council of the Empire, accepted £4,100 as an honourable and amicable settlement of the Marshall Island dipute, preferring a cash settlement to encouraging the delays and risk of arbitration. [The claims of Messrs Burns, Philp, and Co. date from the German assumption of control of the Marshall Islands when a German Company prevented their steamers, which had been some years in the trade, from trading there. ] Received Jan 23, 1.3 a.m. Sydney, Last Night. In reference to the cable concerning the Marshall Islands settlement , this is largely due to the good offices of Doctor Irmir, German ConsulGeneral in Sydney. It wsa through his representations chiefly that Germany invited Burns. Philp, and Co. to send a representative to Berlin to confer. After gaining the consent of the British and Commonwealth Governments, Messrs Burns, Philp, and Go. instructed'Mr Campbell, their London manager, to proceed thither, and offer a settlement for half the amount originally claimed. Finally a settlement was agreed to by both sides for £4,100, roughly one-third of the amount of the claim.
