Atkinson, representative of the Paper Stainers’ Union, moved: “That the Labor Party’s ultimate object be that of obtaining for the workers the full results of their labor, by overthrowing the present competitive system of capitalism, and the institution of a system of public ownership and control of all the means of life.” , , Mr A, Y. Grayson, M.P., declared that we could not attain Socialism until the intelligent democracy wanted it with all their hearts. He was convinced that the whole trend of modern society and industrial revolution was towards Socialism. H. Quelch, a Socialist leader, protested that the Labor Party were sailing under sealed orders. J. R. dynes, A. H. Gill, and P. F. Curran, M.P.s, protested against coercion, which must disrupt the present alliance between the Labor Party and the labor unionists. Ultimately Mr Atkinson’s motion was rejected by 951,000 to 91,000. W. Thorne, M.P., moved that the time had ar rived when the Labor Party should declare a definite municipal andParliamentary programme, based upon the resolutions passed by the annual conference. Quelch seconded the motion, which was defeated by a large majority without a division.
