; Press Association—Copyright. Received Jan. 21st, 1.10 a. Sydney, Last Night. The abnoimally hot weather in the Southern States is causing delay in telegraphic services. An unconfirmed report has reached Melbourne that a tornado has struck Adelaide and has done a lot of damage but no details have been got through the badly working wires. Melbourne, Last Night. To-day was another roasting day. Work generally has been to a large extent stopped owing to the heat. Several more deaths have been reported during the 24 hours.
SCHOOLS NOT RE-OPENED. THOUSANDS SLEEPING THE STREETS. HARVESTING BY MOONLIGHT. Received January 31, 9.54 a.m. Melbourne,. January”2l. All the public schools which were to be re-opened yesterday remain closed owing to the heat. From the same cause the mid-day postal delivery lias been abandoned. On Sunday night a thousand people in poorer quarters slept outside in narrow streets. Whole families slept on the footpaths or in the parks. In the country harvesting has been abandoned in the day time and is carried on by moonlight. GREAT BQSHPIRES. Received Jan. 21, 10 38 a.m. Melbourne, January 21. A cool change set in last night. A bushfire of great magnitude, with a frontage of 40 miles, is sweeping Bdenhope district. It is supposed to have started from a swagman’s fire. Settlers at Dergholm rushed into the river to save their lives, leaving their property to burn. Sheep perished by thousands.
