HOP BEER AND "NO LICENSE."

Oamaru is a no-liccnso district, and a case of somo importance was heard before the Magistrate to-day. ijhe police brought charges against geveral : persons for selling hop beer manufactured locally, tho same being held to be intoxicating liquor. Jt was analysod by Professor Bickerton, who said the beer contained 9.45 per cent, of pure alcohol, equal fo 5.39 per cent, of proof spirit. s?lie porter contained 2.79 per cent. Of alcoliol and fi.l3 per cent, of proof spirit. Professor Bickerton, it was pointed out by the defence, had later slightly modified these figures. The evidence for tho defence was to tlici effect thai liquor even 3 per cent. 61' al'co-. Jjol was not intoxicating. Two medical men, Mr Thomson (analyst), and |he lecturer op matei'ial medica in Jlviuedin, gave evidence to this effect, all four agreeing in tho msiii..
