Miss Ohristabol Panklrarst, the suffragist leader, was born in 1880, and was educated at Southport and Manchester High School, and, at sixteen, abroad at a school in Switzerland. On the death of her father, a year later, she assisted her mother m'earning their living. Miss Panklrarst became a member of the Independent Labour party, and commenced work for the suffrage by sending up resolutions to the L.I.P. Conference, and assisted in getting them carried. In 1903 she formed the Women's Social Political Union, and carried resolutions on woman suffrage in Trades Councils all over the country. In 1904 Miss Pankhurst applied for admission as a student at Lincoln's Inn, and, being refused, she spoke at the Union Society of Loudon—tho well-known Legal Debating Society—on the question of tho admission of women to the Bar, and carried the society with her. In 1905 sbo obtained tho prize for international law at Victoria University, Owen's College, Manchester, and last year she took her LL. B. degree, obtaining honours and being bracketed at the head of the list with one man. She was arrested for interrupting Sir Edward Grey's meeting in Manchester in October . 1905, and went to prison for a week. Miss Paukhurst is one of the most popular speakers on the W.S.P.U. platform.
