MARION BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Dr. Skerman), Ors. Hilton, Lyon, Sutcliffe, Gibbons, Gould, and McEldowney. CORRESPONDENCE. Prom H. F. Oldham, notifying Council that lie had sustained 'an accident while in the employ of Council, which had incapacitated him from work.—Received. Prom Chapman and Tripp, in connection with special orders and deed of covenant, pointing out that the resolution appointing Sinking Fund Commissioners was passed prior to making the special order and that another resolution should therefore bo passed.—The Mayor and Or. Lyon were appointed Commissioners. The Manager of Opera House reported having received £l3 14s in fees during the month. From Public Trust Office, notifying that on receipt of Council’s cheque for £8 11s there will be a sum ofi’£Boo net available for payment to the debenture, holders.—Decided to authorise Public Trustee to pay to. Bank of Now Zealand, Wellington, the sum of £BOO. From the Wanganui Hospital Board and the Patea-Waugauui Charitable Aid Board, forwarding coj>y of Ordor-in-Oouncil apportioning the representation of various local authoritibs on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards; that Marten and Taihape Borough Councils were grouped and entitled to one representative.—Mr J. F. Sicoly was nominated. From same, appointing Marton Borough Council Town Clerk as presiding officer at the election of one member to represent tiio combined district of Marton and Taihape Borough Council, and lixiug Wednesday, 37th November, as the date of the election. From M. Walters, applying for a reduction in the charge for the use of the Opera House for a benefit performance on the 4th December. —The manager to be instructed not to collect the fee.

Prom Mrs L. Pliippeu, complaining of charges made by pouudkeeper and 7s fid paid for damages to Dr. Crawford’s garden. It was claimed that no damage had been done. — The pouudkeeper wrote denying that a charge for damages had been made and that complainant’s cattle wore released on the payment of Is fid made by G. Tphippon.—Copy of pouudkeeper’s letter to be sent to Mrs Phippeu, suggesting that legal action was the best course to settle the dispute. The Gas Manager drew Council’s attention to a previous application made by the gas stokers for an increase in salary.—lt was decided on the motion of Cr. Gibbous to pay stokers an increase of Is.

The Gas Manager recommended that Council indent goods from Loudon to the vain? of £l4B of which £76 would come out c£ general revenue. The goods asked for would meet the demands for gas fittings, etc., for over six mouths.—Or. McEldowney said ho was opposed to too much expenditure aud preferred that goods he ordered from Wellington when required even though the cost was a little higher. On his motion the manager was authorised to order from Horde goods required to the value of £IOO.

8 The Gas Manager was authorised to order 5 tons .of 3-iuch cast-iron pipes from the Loudon agents, the supply of wrought-iron to he obtained in the colour when required. The ponndkeeper reported that 43 head of cattle had been impounded during the month. The foreman of works reported that the culvert on Pnkepapa road, opposite Mr Wilson’s property had been attended to; that three water services iiad been laid; that 60 feet of new water main had been laid in Morris street for Mr J. E. Gampbell’s new residence; that the Borough carter had been engaged a good deal of his time with the water cart aud that owing to an accident he had been unable to work for a week. —Received. It was decided that Mr Hinks he allowed his contract price of 2s 6d per yard for the supply of metal. It was resolved that the clerk be authorised to make some definite arrangement with Mr Sicely, as Engineer for Marton Extension works and to report at a special meeting on sth December.

The next ordinary meeting of the Council was fixed for 16th December. Cr. Hilton moved ‘ ‘ That Mr Leslie Reynolds (Wellington) bo written to asking his terms for a report on a water supply for Marton. Or. Gibbons seconded the motion, urging that it was necessary to get expert advice and ratepayers would then have nothing to complain about. The Mayor said ho was in sympathy with the motion. It was no use entering into the consideration of expenditure on a water supply unless they had expert advice. If they wanted'a supply for drinking purposes they would have to go to the Rangitikei river aud pump the water into a small reservoir, hut this scheme would bo too costly. The motion was carried.

The tender of T. Miles (£6) was accepted for fencing the gravel reserve in Wellington road. Cr. Lyon wanted this matter deferred for six mouths—to April 1st — a fitting day ho added. It was wasting £l7, which they could not afford to do. There was' a big overdraft which was a source of worry to ; the Finance Committee. He moved an amendment that the matter ho deferred till April Ist. which was seconded by Or. McEldowney aud declared lost by four votes to two. It was decided to invito fresh tenders for a gas holder tank. Or. Hilton suggested that Council acquire a metal reserve from Marton Extension Laud Syndicate.—lt was decided that Or. Hilton obtain an Offer from the Company. Cr. Gibbous reminded Council that recommendations in respect to improvements to the football ground had not yet been carried out. It was necessary that those alterations should be started early. He understood another suitable ground was being prepared for the footballers for next season. The Mayor replied that the Park Committee would meet before the next meeting of Council to deal with this matter. Leave of absence was granted Cr. Gibbous from all committee meetings, for six mouths. Or. McEldowney was appointed supervisor of park for December. Accounts amounting to £333 8s 9d were passed for payment, which will bring the overdraft up to £2636 13s 9d. The receipts for the. mouth amounted to £343 14s 2d.
