TEACHERS’ RESIDENCES.
Tress Association, Wanganui, November 21. The condition of the residences of some of the country 'teachers was adversely commented on at the meeting of the Education Board last evening. One member quoted a case where the house was in such a damp situation that moss was constantly sprouting in the fireplaces. The chairman (Mr F. Pirani) said he knew of another case where scones had to be eaten on the same day as they were cooked because the nest day they were covered with a coat of mildew owing to the damp. The Herald, referring to the question, suggests that the matter of country teachers’ residences is one that might well be taken up by the New Zealand Educational Institute, saying that under the present conditions men charged with an all important national duty were often asked to work under disheartening circumstances. One member of the Board at last night’s meeting said that the Government were talking a lot about what they were doing for education and it was time it made a start to house the teacher decently. The Wanganui College Board of Trutsees Jdias decided to place the area of endowment close to the centre of the town in the market for leasing shortly.
