MANGAWEKA NOTES.

From Onr Own Correspondent.

About throe years ago Mangawcka could boast of a' brass baud—well equipped and trained—-but this is uo longer the case, This is a bad state of affairs. Last evening a musical gentleman spoke to mo on the subject of reforming the baud, seeing that there is a fair number of musically-trained inclined young niou at present employed in the town, and if there is sufficient support I don’t think it wil bo long before Maugaweka will possess a (irstrclass brass baud to liven up tilings generally. Speaking of the defunct baud, Sir Bush, the gonial bandmaster who had charge, is at present I believe leading a large body of instrumentalists in Samoa. Mr ’ Bush was an export clarionet player. Included in the votes for roads and bridges in the Wanganui district will bo noticed one of £6OO for Maugawoka-Tc Kapua road. Tins should be fully spent. The present mail from Maugaweka to To Kapua hat; to oo by rail to Taihapo, again to Mataroa, and thence by mailman to Te Kapua and Wairepd, a distance of forty odd miles. The distance between Maugaweka and . Waitepo is only 12 miles, 9k( of which is formed for vehicular traffic, leaving only %% miles to complete to connect To Kapua with Maugaweka! Now it behoves the business men in this township to see that every effort is made to push the road through, thus connecting with a rich and prosperous distiict. To Kapua settlors arc anxious to trade with our town and why not put your shoulders together and have the road completed before winter again sets in, instead of allowing tho settlers to trade elsewhere ? In tho bnshfclling case on Thursday a solicitor was trying to draw out of a witness the way ho measured the bush when the witness replied ‘ ‘ Oil, we get within a chain or two of the acreage.” “(Now,” said the solicitor, ‘‘What I want to know is, how you arrive at your decision? Wo will take a piece of pencil, for instance,'what is the first thing ' you do with it.” Witness: ‘‘Sharpen it sir. ’
