Press Association. Christchurch. November 0. The Canterbury A. and P. Metropolitan Show opened to-day iu dull weather. The implements and machinery, Now Zealand manufactures and carriages were judged to -day and the fencing competition was held iu the, afternoon. To-morrow the draught horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, dairy produce and preserved meats will he judged. The light horses, tradesmen’s carts and sheep dogs will ho reserved for Friday. There was only a small display of implements to-dav and these exhibits only totalled 10T as against 471 last year. Traction ami oil engines are principally in evidence, but one of the most interesting features of the section is the milking machines shewn in operation. Nearly seventy vehicles were entered in tiro carriage class, the exhibits including drays, lorries, station waggons, Whitechapel and dog carts, gigs, and pony carts. Largo numbers of sheep were placed in the pens near the railway siding to-day ready to be taken to the competition pens behind the pavilion. ' it is agreed that they display exceptionally good condition and it is expected that the sheep will bo well up to tiro standard. Cattle and horses will be taken on to the ground to-morrow iu time to bo judged. November 7.

Heavy rain fell over night and drizzled during the morning, creaking up towards noon. The rain will be welcome to farmers. There was largo attendance at the Show at which the programme was: Judging competition by young fanners, judging draught horses, cattle and sheep, dairy produce, preserved meats and pigs. For the afternoon military competitions, log dropping, judging of hacks, driving competitions and other items.
