Press Association—Copyright London, November 4. ( Tho Unionists won upwards of 135 seats at the English and Welsh elections, a great majority of their victories being in boroughs which ©looted Liberal members of tho House of Commons. Tiie Liberals won 33 ssats, Labour candidates 33, Independents 4. Socialists o. , ~ Tho Socialists seeking re-election for four boroughs were ousted, and severely defeated in 37 where they attempted to displace those councillors seeking election.^ Mrs (Dr). G-arrett -and five otnei ladies have been elected municipa. councillors. ...... The Chronicle says that the primary cause of the Unionist victories at the municipal elections was fear of the Socialists, and, secondarily, that the Anglicans and the j. v Qman Catholics wore assailing the Liberals. It was not a bad thing for Liberalism if the Socialists would continue their Ishmaelito tactics by indiscriminately attacking both practical parties, as tho results at Huddersfield and elsewhere prove. Ihe Chronicle adds that the friendship of the Socialists is more dangerous to Liberalism than hostility.
