AN ARTIFICIAL FACE.
i • i ! Dr. Delair lias presented to'vthe j members of the French Academy of • Medicine a man with an artificial face. In consequence of an accident . •with a gnu while ont shooting the i ' man had his chin, the lower part of ! i the lower jaw, lips, a portion of J ; his tongue, and the whole of his '■ upper jaw and nose blown away. These have been replaced by artifi- , , cial parts, and the doctors present j expressed astonishment at the mar- , . velloas ingenuity with which the | work has been done. • j The mechanical face is in four j ; pieces. The first consists of a silver I i groove,“into which some of the lower f \ teeth are fixed. This is attached to : a dental apparatus of tin, into which ‘ are fixed the remaining teeth. The j second piece consists of a dental ap- ; ‘ paratus in vulcanite and gold for the s upper row of nine teeth. 'This is j fitted to two small protuberances, I ; which fit into the nasal cavities. | ' This also fills up the right sinus, j which was smashed in. At the back j I is a piece of gold mechanism with j hooks,- used to fasten on the face i ' piece. ! The third piece of the mechanical ‘ • face consists of the chin and lower j ; lip. This is of iudiarubber, painted ; !to resemble nature. Over the chin a • false beard is fixed. At the back are f I a couple of small bolts, which pass I through holes of the teeth and fix the ■ lip to the artificial lower jaw. The I ; fourth and last piece of the appara- j j tus consists of the upper lip and ■ i nose, also in iudiarubber, and i : painted, to which is attached a false j i moustache. At the back are two j I small clasps, to which the upper I dental piece and jaw are fixed. 1 • The man is able to masticate his ; : food with comparative ease. Prom j : a distance of a few feet the appear- I , ance of his face is quite natural. He i j can take off his artificial face him- j I self, and washes ii in soap and j i water every day.
