THE HOLIDAY QUESTION.
Per Press Association. Masterton, October 30. The Mayor of Masterton has declared Saturday the King's Birthday holiday in view of possible risk of consequences, through breach of the provisions of trades unions awards or legal technicalities involved. Wanganui, October 30." The local chamber of commerce applied to the Premier to issue authority for factories and shops to he closed on Monday in place of Saturday. The Premier replied that the instructions desired could be given but no action would be taken by Government against either factories or shops which kept open on Saturday and closed on Monday. The local representative of the labour department however states that nothing can override the law forbidding the employment of femalos and youths on Saturday afternoon and though Government may overlook tho transgression, tho Union aud Arbitration Court are bound to take action.
