MARION BOROUGH COUNCIL
The monthly meeting, was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Dr. Sherman), Ora. Sutcliffe, McEldowuey, Hilton, Lyon and Gould. Leave of absence was granted to Oi. Gibbons. CORRESPONDENCE.
Prom Fnllorton-SmUh and Miles, asking Council’s consent to right-of-way granted in leases Gascoigne to Avery and same to Mercer.— Granted, the Mayor, Crs. Lyon and Sutcliffe to affix the Council seal. From Treasury, provisionally approving of loan of £4OOO. From same, stating that where whole area of borough is included as a rating area it is unnecessary to deposit a special roll for public in-, gpoctiou.—Received. Prom A. H. Eniggo, manager of Opera House, applying for an increase of salary from £25 to £35 for this year only to enable him to recover £lO deposit lodged last year with Returning Officer when a candidate for the Mayoralty.—Request acceded to, Cr. McEldowney dissenting. Prom Manager of Opera House, reporting that £sl 7s had been received in fees and rents since last meeting.
From A.M.P. Society, Informing Council that a cheque for £2502 10s had been paid into Bank of New Zealand on 14th October and debentures No. 1 and 2 received in exchange ; also that Society would require interest from loth October to Ist April, 1908.—Received. From F. D. Strombom, asking Council to supply water and gas to his house iff course of erection.— Agreed to. From Zajonskowski Bros., asking that approaches to their four cottages ho metalled. A similar application was made for Mrs W. Frederick.— Held over pending poll on proposed
loan for street improvements. From H. M. Norris, requesting payment of £1 for street kerbiug bo paid to Mrs Norris. —Granted. From W. Oldfield, offering to supply gravel at 8s per yard, delivered at' the Gas Works.—Left to Gas Committee.
From John C. Moyers, asking permission to remove about 00 yards of soil from bank on Wanganui road to fill up hollow iti section in Follott stroo t. —Gran tod.
From Martou Ratepayers’ Association, forwarding a resolution passed urging Council to lay larger mains from reservoir as far as Borough Council and down Wellington road to Morris street; also that necessary' improvements to the reservoir should made.—Received. From Fire Brigade, applying for subsidy due 30th September.—To be paid subject to production of halfyearly balance sheet. From J. F. Sicely, suggesting that Council take action to safeguard against encroachments upon the streets of the Borough.—Agreed to give effect to Air Sicely’s recomiieudations.
From J. F. Sicely, engineer, reporting having mot MesrssjF. R. H, Brice and Dix in regard to alterations required by Council to the plans and specifications for streets formation ju Martou Extension. These had been agreed to. It was now found that tiio whole of the suggested alterations were not embodied in the gmeuded plans and specifications. After examining those ho made further notes of what was required. Atlhough the plans had not been approved. the contract was let and he believed work had been commenced.
Ample power was given Council cmder the Act whieii provides a lanalty for not complying with the requirements of Council, ‘ It was resolved (Crs. McEldowney
Sutcliffe) that Martou Extension band Company bo informed that Mr Sicely has been appointed Borough Engineer and that the work to bo done upon the Martou Extension streets must bo completed to his satisfaction. —It was further resolved hat the Company be asked to afford tiie Council proof that they have provided in the contract for street construction for compliance with lonuoil’s requisitions of October 3rd and ITth.
I Tho Gas Committee recommended : I —(1 That Messrs Oldfield Bros. ’ [tender for cartage of cement from [Marten Junction Station to the Gas jVt'oi'hs ho accepted at Cd per cask; [also that for the cartage of Kakariki [gravel at 2s 4d per cubic yard, proIvided Oonncil agrees to take it. (2) rPlwt tenders be invited for excavating ami labor only in making concrete casing for gas holder. (3) That the following works be approved: Laying eight chains of 3m. pipes in Russell street to cost £4O; eight chains of l'.< in. pipes in Boss street to uost£lS ; six chains of l>Jiu. pipes iu Harris street to cost £l2 10s. (-1) That tho general scheme dealing with Block Jo, be approved as per gas manager’s report of October 25th. (5) That the question of increased pressure of gas for north end of Broadway ho deferred for tho present. (0) That prices he obtained iom a Wellington firm for the supply signs pipes required for 12 mouths. -Resolved that recommendations be approved. Tlie Foreman’s report was read aud adopted.. Resolved (Crs. Hilton —McElliowucy) that tenders ho called for fencing gravel pit in Wellingtonroad. Cr. Lyon opposed tho expenditure. Mrs Humphrey’s offer for metal Ivras accepted. The matter of dangerous crossing in High street was left to Works Committee.
Vi’. Cruickshauk applied for water lo residence now being erected next to railway lino.—To bo informed the main is not under control of Council but the Railway Department. Accounts amounting to £7O 3s 8d (general) and £129 Tls lid salaries were passed for payment, leafing a debit balance cf £2740 8s 10d. Re-
ceipts during the month totalled £1(K!0 5s id which includes £CSSI Os M transferred from the loan account. Notice of motion by Or. Lyon : "That the resolution of the Council at its special meeting bold on Monday the 7th October, 1907. adopting
the recommendations of the Marton P-irk Committee held on the 2nd October, 1907, be, and the same is hereby revoked, and with a view to effecting economics in the park expenditure, and thereby tending to lighten the rates borne by the rate-
payers of the Borough of Marton, this Ooucuil proceed to consider the whole question of the Marton Park expenditure. In the alternative I shall move at such meeting so much, only of the above resolution as may h admissablc.
