Melbourne Cup. Press Association.—-Copyright. ; Melbourne, October 23. To-day’s quotations for the Melbourne Cup are 3 to 2 against Apologue, 7 to X v. Tartan, 8 to 1 v. Poseidon and Mountain King, 10 to 1 v. Mooltan and Welcome Trist, 16 to 1 V. Spinaway. May King has been scratched for the Cup. Caulfield Cup-Running. Melbourne, October 28. ■ The suggested inquiry into the running of the New Zealand owned horse Apologue has been allowed to fall through. It will bo remembered that Mr Cleland, owner of Apologue, expressed himself os being dissatisfied With the running of his hoi-so in the Caulfield Cup iu which he was beaten by , his stable companion Poseidon. Mr Cleland asked the V.A.T.C. stewards to hold an inquiry. This they consented to do, if Mr Cleland would guarantee to pay all expenses of holding same. Such a reply to an owner’srequest seems to convey the idea that tho stewards who control racing affairs at Caulfield, considered Mr Cleland’s complaint a frivolous one.
