FIRES.
Tiir Press Association. Dunedin, October 24. A six-roomed wooden house ami furniture, tiio property of James Peebles, was totally destroyed by fire at North-East Valley to-day. Insurances: Norwich Union £3OO, New Zealand £l-10. The estimated loss over insurauco is £2(io. Mrs Peebles and son were the only occupants of the house at the time of the firo, which is supposed to have originated from a small fire in the dining room. A firo occurred in J. Wren's (painter) shop in Princes street this afternoon, doing damage to the cxteut of £SO. A hoy left a tin of turpentine and other material standing iu a storo at the back of the premises, and a workman coming in and mistaking tho material for water, put it on a gas ring to boil for paste. Tho tin ignited, and blazed fiercely, and tho workman promptly took it off, pouring tho contents into a sink near by. The overflow from the tin set firo to some straw near, which blazed up, sotting fire to tho roof, and causing damago to tho ornamental glass, etc. insurances: Tho building is valued at £2OOO and isjnsured in the Royal Exchange for"£4so, Victoria £2OO, Liverpool London and Globe £3OO. The stock is valued at £2500, and is insured in the United for £450, Australian Alliance £250, Kort Horn £4OO, South {British £2OO, North Queensland £450;
