Per Press Association. Ashbuetok,October 20. At 2 o'clock this morning business promises in East street, occupied by David Sutherland, confectioner and caterer, and A. T. H. Williams, bookseller and stationer, were gutted bv fire, and Sutherland, his wife, ami a servant girl, who occupied tho upper storey as a dwelling, just managed to escape m a dishabille state by way of the verandah. Whon Sutherland retired to bod at 1 o'clock everything was apparently safe, but shortly before 2 o'clock the occupants of the shop wero aroused by Constable O'Grady. Tho flro commenced in tho kitchen of Sutherland's shop, and the rear portion ot Doth premises, with contents, were gutted before tho brigade subdued tho flames. Sutherland's stock-in-trade, fittings, .and dining-room furniture wero insured lor £oW m ! the North British, but there was no insurance on the household furniture and personal offects, which were all destroyed. Williams' stock was insured for?£soo, but ite was carrying over £IOOO worth, which is more or i loss damaged bv smoko, fire, and I water. Tho building was owned by I Mrs W. Anderson, and was insured '" for about £GOO In the South British. j The front portions of the shops are ; not materially damaged by Are.
