THE AUSTRALIAN TARIFF.
Press Association—Copyright. London, October 14. The Tariff Commission has published an elaborate analysis of the new Australian tariff. It considers that while it will probably cause a transference of trade from other countries to the United. Kingdom and affect the relative proportions of different branches, British exports to Australia are unlikely to diminish, and it may increase the total volume of exports. The report emphasises that under previous tariffs the British share of Australian import trade [steadily diminished. A revision was necessary in the interest of Australian revenue. It is estimated that the value of Australian imports placed on the United Kingdom's free list is at least three million. Those placed on the general free list amount to at least seven millions. There still remains a large area of imports to which preference can be applied.
