BRITISH RAILWAYS.

Press Association. — London, October 11. Mr Richard Bell declared that when nationalisation came thousands of railway men would suffer, because much surplus labour would follow upon the removal of competition. He concluded by championing private investors in railways and making a bold stand against some confiscation ideas current. Subsequently the Congress altered the resolution to read “ownership instead of “State control,” and also adopted a resolution condemning the tendency among railways to penalise British trade by giving preferential rates to foreign producers and manufacturers. Mr Lloyd George, at Cardiff, said he would be iu constant communication with Sir H.-Oampoll-Bannerman on every aspect of the railway crisis, and the Board of Trade would exhaust all its powers to prevent the catastrophe of a groat strike.
