ALLEGED RAGGING.

At the Magistrate’s Court to-day a charge of common assault is being heard against six cleaners who, it is alleged, assaulted a now cleaner, Arthur Bray, in Timaru enginesheds. Sub-luspootor Green, in opening tho case for tho prosecution, said tho Railway Department looked upon such conduct as very serious, and Hie General Manager of tho_ New Zealand Railwaysjiad asked him to press for a substantial penalty. Mr Groen said tho assault was what was termed ragging. The victim was first thrown down and gagged with a piece of dirty waste, his clothes were opened and oil poured over him, and his face smeared with soot and greeso. Mr Ekuslio, who appeared for all tho accused, said they denied abso T lately that any sueh assault as that described bv the police took place. The case is likely to last all day.
