FIRE ON THE TURAKINA.
Per Press Association. AVELLINGTON, October 6. The Union Steam Ship Company’s moveable ten-inoh pump was placed in tho Turakina to-day. Steam was supplied by tho tug Ternwhiti alongside. This afternoon tho forehold is still two* thirds full of water while No. 2 hold iS still half empty. Tho vessel rests on the bottom of the harbour. It is not certain that the butter cargo is irretrievably damaged. It is now being stored in" the Harbour Board sheds for inspection. Dozens of drays have been engaged all day carting away flax from the ship. The best portions of the wool, flax and
kauri gnm will bo reconditioned. Some of the water pumped into the vessel on Friday night found its way into tho stoke hold which was flooded to a depth of throe feet on Saturday. This has now been reduced to a few inches. Wellington, October 7. ”3 The work of pumping the water out of the Turakina’s holds is being continued to-day. Tho lumpers are working on the damaged cargo kneO deep in water. If possible this afternoon the refrigeraitug machinery will be set running to keep down the temperature in freezing chambers in order to prevent the mutton and beef decomposing. Tho steamer Kahn is loading np 1500 bales of salvaged wool and will leave with it for Napier this evening. Tho wool will ho reconditioned and repacked.
