DROWNING FATALATIES.

Hokitika, October 5.
A man named John Johnston, employed on the Prince of Wales Dredge at Eoss, was drowned this morning. The deceased and his mates Currie and Eohcrts were proceeding in a pontoon to the dredge when the pontoon sank. Currie and Roberts saved themselves by swimming ashore. They made every effort to save Johnston, but when his body was recovered life was extinct. The deceased leaves a widow and one child three weeks old.
October 7.
The inquest on the body of the man Johnston drowned from a dredge near Eoss on Saturday resulted in a. verdict of accidental death. A rider added that the regulation should be enforced that all dredges should have printed rules and diagrams as to the resuscitation of the apparently drowned. Deceased's body was quickly recovered, but attempts at resuscitation failed. . Wiianoakei, October 5.
News was received from Towai this afternoon to the effect that Francis Montagu, 54 years of age, a married man with a largo family, was drowned on Friday evening while attempting to cross the Maramaku river which was in flood. No one was with him at the time. His body was found this morning. The deceased, who was a storekeeper near Towai, was a well known settler of many years standing in the district.
