In the House of Representatives, in the Tariff debate, an amendment was carried against Government in favour of a differential excise rate on handmade tobacco.

A missionary at Oba Island complains of the evil effects on natives of the illicit sale of intoxicants by traders. Two natives of the island were killed in a recent drunken kght.
