The members of tbe choir of St. Stephens’ church, have fixed upon the 30th instant for the last of the social gatherings, which have proved a source of pleasure to many. The numerous friends of Mr and MrsJ. McEldowney of Marton will regret to hear of the death of Mrs Keetley, mother of Mrs McEldowney, who has resided with her daughter for many years. Although ot advanced years Mrs Keetley was in full possesion of all her faculties until a short time ago when she had a stroke after which she never recovered full conciousness and her death took place this
morning. A mooting was held at Marton last evening to consider tlio advisability of promoting a point-to-point steeplechase on foot. “It was decided to have a race on Wednesday 23rd October, nominations to close on October 16th. The distance will bo about ris miles, and the course, which will not be made known until the day previ ms to the race, is to be selected by the commiteee. Considerable interest is being taken in this event, and fully 20 nominations have already been received. Competitors (living within a radius of G miles ■will alone be eligible to start. The Anglican Bishop of Auckland (Dr Neligan), in an an interview regarding the remarks passed by Mr Justico Donniston on the farcical nature of the proceedings necessary to obtain _ a divorce under a decree for the restitution of conjugal rights, said-.—“ I don’t believe in divorce at all, and my views have been frequently and strongly expressed on the subject. I agree with every word the Judge said, and am pleased that he has spoken in the way he has. It is scandalous.” Bishop 'Neligan (went on to explain that the Church of England did all it could to discountenance divorce, the marriage of divorced persons being absolutely forbidden in the Church of the Province of Now Zealand.
Miss Amy Remington, daughter of Mr F. C. Remington, formerly of Marton, has just passed an examinition for Associate Pianist of Trinity College, raining 98 marks out of a possible 100. Mr Charles Edwards, oxaminer'ffor the College, speaking to a reporter of the Dominion said that Miss Remington is “not only gifted with the divine flee, but she has a remarkable knowledge of technique which reflects the highest credit on those who gave her early training. lam unable to say what the Board of Trinity College will do at Home, but I hope they will help to bring about a recognition of her claims, as her friends here should do also. With proper study, she would develop into one of the finest musicians m the world—of that I am absolutely certain. Of all the thousands aud thousands of candidates of all ages that I have examined during many years past, she has passed with higher honours than any other, with one solitary exception.
