Phenomena! Thunderstorm
Per Press Association.
Masteuto'n, October 2,
This district was visited by a storm of phenomenal violenco at an earlv hour this morning. When the wind was blowing in heavy gusts from tho north-west itg suddenly veered to tho southerly, causing a kind of cyclonic whirlwind. Ono incident was the carrying "p of a sheet of galvanised iron far abovo the tops of two-storey houses, the iron swirling around like a sheet of pancr. During the height of the storm many residents were apprehensive that their houses would bo blown over. The roar of tho gale an towards tho Tararna--Ranges was almost torrifviug. Shortly at tor 8 a.m a thunderstorm set in with a" tropical downpour of rain lasting about an hour, during which nearly half an inch of rain fell. The meteorological visitation is one that Alastert'ou has not often experienced hitherto. The phenomcual force of tho wind drovo the rain' almost horizontally, so that almost certainly the rainfall registered by tho gango is considerably less than tlio actual fall. .__
